Edward Stiechen Quote

“Every other artist begins with a blank canvas, a piece of paper the photographer begins with the finished product”

I found this quote posted on twitter by Bury Art Gallery, and felt i had to disagree with it, for me the photographer has to have an idea of what they are trying to get from a shot and utilise what is around to help this, not to just click and shoot with the job done, especially using film.  Using film the photographer DOES start with a piece of blank film or paper and develops the image on to this. Also the use of lighting and post production for digital and analouge work the skilled photographer can change a scene completely from what the so called “finished product” was in the first place, by dodging, burning, blurring or sharpening selected areas of the photograph.
